My lockdown list

From DIY meal kits and farm-fresh veg boxes, to beer and wine delivered to your door and gourmet gifts for friends in need, this is my essential lockdown list. None of this is sponsored or an ad, just things that I’ve enjoyed during the lockdown, that I hope you might too. I’ll update as and when I discover new and delicious things...

Thou shall have a fishy

Since my brilliant local fishmonger sadly closed (temporarily, I hope), I turned to the internet for help...

Fish for Thought
Fish for Thought specialises in delivering free, sustainable and seriously delicious Cornish seafood to your door. There’s a good choice of fresh fish, shellfish, crab, lobster, smoked fish and more, as well as a brilliant selection of seafood boxes and meal kits which include sauces and recipes. The moules marinère (£9.25) kit is cheap, easy and very tasty, and the whole Cornish lobsters (from £14 each) are just the delicious ticket for a special occasion. Get 10% your first order when you sign up for the mailing list fishforthought.co.uk

The Upper Scale
This was a recommendation from restauranteur Sam Harrison, who owns the fabulous Sam’s Riverside in Hammersmith (check out details of the restaurant’s current pledge system here and grab yourself a sups to look forward to). Upper Scale usually supplies fish and seafood to Sam’s restaurant (and other top London eateries), so the quality is top notch. They can deliver everything from sashimi grade tuna and fresh oysters to smoked salmon, fresh fillets and a whole host of frozen fishy treats. Free next day delivery to central London and surrounding areas, minimum £20 theupperscale.co.uk

Pengelly’s
Our favourite friendly fishmongers in Cornwall, by the quayside in Looe, sells top notch fish and shellfish straight off the boat, and they can deliver it all over the UK via a 24-hour refrigerated courier service for maximum freshness. For almost half a century, Pengelly’s have been supplying a fresher-than-fresh selection from the day-boat fleet of Looe and Polperro; choose from lobster, crab, mussels and more, or try a Looe day-caught fish selection. Also, their hand-picked crab meat is second to none. Delivery costs £14.99 for up to 25kg so why not order together with friends? pengellys.co.uk/old/shop.php

Notting Hill Fish Shop
This super smart fishmonger is now delivering SAME DAY (and further ahead, if you’d prefer). Choose from fresh and smoked fish, shellfish, seafood and caviar, as well as chef curated boxes and ‘chef made’ dishes made fresh on site daily by top chefs, such as luxury fish pie, crab bisque, chorizo, bean and octopus stew, smoked mackerel pâté and more. As well as their fishy delights, the shop is also now stocking and delivering top quality meat from butcher HG Walter, exquisite Natoora fruit and veg, bread from the one and only Hedone Bakery, and cheeses from the legendary Neal's Yard Dairy. Meals on wheels

The best recipes boxes and DIY meal kits I‘ve tried so far..

Patty & Bun DIY burger kit
If you haven’t slobbered over Patty & Bun DIY kit on Instagram yet, have you even been in lockdown? P&B’s brilliant boxes contain all you need to make four completely delicious burgers at home. There are two boxes to choose from; meat and plant-based, and each kit contains all the ingredients that the much-loved burger establishment uses, from top-notch beef patties courtesy of butcher HG Walter, fresh brioche buns, tasty cheese slices, and pots of Patty & Bun’s very own smoky mayo, homemade pickled onions and smoky onions too. In a nutshell, the whole experience was a joy, from waiting for the box (yes, even waiting for the box!), receiving the box (oh joy! I would have hugged the courier if I could), to hastily unpacking and inspecting each delicious item. Not to mention the sheer excitement and anticipation of what we dubbed (imaginatively) as – BURGER NIGHT. It was incredibly easy and fun to make and a WONDER to eat. Kits are £25 each plus £6 delivery within the M25 only (nationwide delivery launching soon): pattyandbun.co.uk.

London Shell Co’s Shore to Door
Another completely delicious evening recently was thanks to one of the London Shell Co.’s ‘Seashore to Front Door’ boxes. We went for the ready to cook BBQ box (£60 + delivery, feeds two generously) – filled with tandoori monkfish kebabs, Dorset char, whole mackerel, king prawns, flat bread, coleslaw and a smoky bean salad, as well as a delicious bottle of The Grand Duchess English sparkling wine from Hampshire. It was ridiculously easy to cook as it was all pre-prepared and came with printed instructions. The ingredients were all super fresh, the salads and flat bread were yum and the fizz was really delicious too. Two big thumbs up. You can order a ready-to-eat fishy picnic box (£45) and some great wines as well. Friday delivery only within the M25 shop.londonshellco.com

Pasta Evangelists
I had wanted to try Pasta Evangelists for ages and lockdown provided the perfect excuse. In a nutshell, they deliver fresh, restaurant-quality pasta recipe boxes across the UK, so you can make gourmet pasta in minutes at home (see mouth watering main image above). Fresh sauces and garnishes all included; our first delivery included an Amalfi lemon and mozzarella tortelloni with sage butter and hazelnut crumb, and it was honestly one of the best bowls of pasta I’ve ever eaten. Tonight I am having crab and prawn ravioloni with fennel butter and lemon zest pangrattato and I am EXCITED. It’s not a cheap habit, but the pasta does freeze well and if you use this link and you’ll get 25% off (and I’ll get a fiver too, just to be clear). pastaevangelists.com

Fresh Deluxe
This brand new, friendly small business offers fantastically fresh fruit and veg boxes complete with recipes from top restaurant chefs. All recipes are veggie/vegan friendly and easy to follow, and delivery is free. My box arrived today and it’s HUGE. The produce is the freshest I’ve experienced in a delivered fruit and veg box and the recipes – this week curated by @chefdarrenburke, chef instructor at César Ritz Colleges, Switzerland and ex head chef at Le Bois Sauvage in the Swiss Alps and The Lodge in Verbier – include aubergine, courgette and red lentil curry, spring dauphinoise potatoes, and ginger poached rhubarb. Fantastic value and friendly service. I can’t wait to get cooking. Get 20% off your first order; a small box costs £29 (£23.20 with 20% discount) and makes at least 4 recipes. A medium box costs £39 (£31.20 with 20% discount). Delivery radius is within the north and south circular, but they also deliver to SW London as far as Wimbledon, Kingston, Teddington and Twickenham. Website coming soon – in the meantime orders can be placed via Facebook or Instagram, or by e-mail; order@freshdeluxe.co.uk.

Mindful Chef
An oldie, but a goodie. I used to use Mindful Chef but stopped as essentially I found it quite expensive, but again lockdown (and wanting to avoid the supermarket as much as humanly possible) provided the perfect opportunity to restart my subscription. The portions can be quite small sometimes, but other than that there isn’t much that I don’t like about it; there’s a great choice of recipes every week, and they are always simple to make but also fresh, interesting and tasty, and I find it encourages me to cook things that I wouldn’t normally, which is fun. Obviously, you’re paying a premium for the convenience but, especially at the moment, I think it’s worth it. Use this link and you’ll get £20 off (and so will I) mindfulchef.com

Farm to fork

Coombeshead Farm
The first time I had lunch at Coombeshead, I cried because it was so delicious. For real. The whole experience was just glorious, and it has been every time since. Tom Adams’ farm is a must-eat experience for all appreciators of good food, but for now, whilst heading down to Cornwall is sadly not an option, you can order wholesome, homemade and ridiculously delicious provisions from Coombeshead’s online larder. For game changing pork (£120 for an incredible large box) and the best sourdough in the world (£20 for 4 loaves – it freezes well), look no further. coombesheadfarm.co.uk

Gladwin Brothers
I’ve had some excellent meals at the Gladwin Brothers’ London restaurants (The Shed and Nutbourne in particular) so was delighted to hear that they’ve started delivering their home grown deliciousness form their Sussex farm. We ordered the Farm Fresh veggie box (£25) which was filled with treats such as muddy Jersey Royals, rhubarb, asparagus, courgettes, wild mushrooms, garlic and more, and we added a few extras such as Chalk Stream Trout Pâté, organic apple juice, yoghurt, wild garlic pesto, rhubarb ice cream (which was amazing) and a couple of bottles of the Gladwin’s own wine – the very delicious Nutbourne Sussex Reserve (£11.50). You can also add meat, ready to cook dishes such as wellingtons and pies, cheeses and much, much more. Without exception, everything we had was delicious. Minimum order £60, see website for delivery postcodes gladwinbrothers.com

Beer o’clock

Jeffersons
My local brewery in Barnes SW13, run by hop-obsessed and completely lovely brothers Freddie and George. They deliver for free locally, but can also post beers nationwide. I enjoy all their beers and at the moment they’re releasing new brews every two weeks or so. My current faves are Pulse – a thirst quenching, crisp pale ale dry hopped with Blanc – perfect any time of the day (!), and Interfusion, which is a raspberry Gose (a German style beer). I’ve never really been a fan of sweet / fruity / flavoured beers but this is completely different - it's tart and refreshing, bursting with fresh raspberries and PERFECT for a sunny day. Get 10% off orders over £30 with the code SUPPORTLOCAL jeffersonsbrewery.co.uk

St Austell Brewery
I am a huge fan of all things Cornish, and St Austell’s beers are no exception. Their Tribute pale ale is light, hoppy and dangerously easy to drink. Specially commissioned for British Airways, their 330ml cans (my can size of choice) are usually enjoyed at 30,000 feet. However, due to the current global situation and the majority of flights being grounded, they’re now available via St Austell’s online shop at a very good price - £45 for 48 cans and/or £24 for 24 cans. Delivery is free too. staustellbreweryshop.co.uk

Micro Beers
This is a west London only job – but awesome bottle shop Micro Beers in Sheen is delivering locally. Owner Sean has a staggering collection of beers, ales, ciders, pilsners and porters from all over the world, and some great wines too. Delivering to East Sheen, Mortlake, Barnes, Richmond, Kew, Putney, Wandsworth, Wimbledon, Ham, Twickenham, Kingston, Surbiton, Chiswick and Hammersmith. Free delivery for all orders over £50. All orders under £50 will incur a £5 delivery fee microbeers.airposwebstore.com

Burrow Hill Cider
If it’s cider that you’re after, The Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Burrow Hill Cider are traditional cider makers and distillers and their range of booze is one of the very best. Their staggeringly beautiful farm in Somerset sits among 180 acres of cider apple orchards at the base of the magical Burrow Hill, and they’ve been pressing cider for over 200 years (do visit if you’re ever passing - the shop is brilliant and you can stroll around the orchards and meet the pigs). You can order their cider online – go for a flagon of half and half and you won’t regret it. As well as their delicious cider and cider brandy, they also make award-winning liqueurs such as the Kingston Black Aperitif (£11.50 for 50cl). We served this at our wedding and two years on I still get guests asking for the details. It’s a blend of cider brandy and vintage cider apples and quite simply, it’s delicious. A sip of sweet Somerset orchard in a glass. A chilled bottle in the fridge is a necessity, lockdown or not. somersetciderbrandy.com

Wine time

Thankfully wine merchants were declared as essential service early on in this process, but if your local independent wine shop is currently closed then try one of these…

Rick Stein
While Rick’s establishments are sadly currently closed, some of his much-loved restaurant wines are now available to buy online and enjoy at home. With the help of the company’s wine aficionado Charlie Stein, there’s a good selection, including my personal favourite – Rick’s Spanish White, a fresh and thirst quenching Spanish Verdejo, which is currently a steal at £9.95 (usually £29 when eating in). You can buy a single bottle or there are delicious discounts to be had for cases…just saying. Delivery is free if you spend over £100, or a fixed £10 otherwise. If you live in Cornwall, you can also ‘click & collect’ from the Rick Stein distribution centre at St Columb. rickstein.com

The Vintner
I recently discovered The Vintner – they’re a specialist independent wine merchant in based London, selling only 100 hand-picked wines perfect for drinking now. It’s affordable, easy to navigate, delivery was quick and the wine is delicious. thevintner.com

Lea and Sandeman
I am lucky to live near Lea and Sandeman in Barnes, but they also have other shops Chelsea, Kensington, Chiswick and Fulham. Barnes’ friendly manager Derek is a font of all knowledge when it comes to wine, and the selection (of both affordable and more special occasion wines) is always superb. Great fizz and spirits too. Pop in if you can or order online for home delivery. Try the organic ‘Old Hands’ (£9.50, or £8.95 case price), made by a collective of old farmers in Yecla, Spain – both red and white are delicious, and won’t break the bank. leaandsandeman.co.uk

Quarantinis

I love making cocktails at home, but recently I’ve had the pleasure of not one but TWO delicious lockdown cocktail options that require little-to-no equipment or fuss.

So Bar cocktail kit
Richmond’s gorgeous candlelit cocktail den, So Bar, is now offering ingenious cocktail kits delivered to your door. Choose from Lime Margaritas, Negronis and/or Espresso Martinis. Each kit contains everything you need to mix four serves of your selected cocktail, to the exact methods that they use at So Bar. This includes fresh ingredients, syrups and garnishes, and of course instructions of how to make them. The kits also include coasters, and there were even a few coffee beans to top my Espresso Martinis. The only thing you need to bring to this cocktail party is ice, glassware and one or two other common kitchen utensils. Proper cocktails, no cut corners, and brilliantly packaged. £30 per kit. Free delivery every Friday to the local area - this currently includes Richmond, Twickenham, Teddington, Kingston, Putney, Chiswick and nearby, but if you are unsure about whether they deliver to your address, then get in contact. sobar-richmond.co.uk

Primo Aperitivo
When I said little-to-no fuss, this literally involves pouring it in to a glass with some ice, a slice of orange et voila! A negroni. Primo’s mixture is a tasty combination of dry gin, sweet vermouth, bitter aperitif and orange essence. I’ve always been a little dubious about pre-bottled cocktails, but this one is absolutely delicious, and the bottle / packaging is nice too. £26.90 for 500ml. Shipping is £5 or FREE of you buy two bottles. You know it makes sense. primoaperitivo.com

I’ve also been enjoying -
Warner’s multiple award-winning Lemon Balm Gin, Mirabeau Rosé Gin and Maestro Dobel Tequila.

Gourmet gifts

Want to cheer up a friend? Wish someone a happy lockdown birthday? Etc, etc. I got frustrated trying to find things I could send directly, that didn’t cost the earth (once delivery had been added and the minimum order met, etc), and that would arrive on time. Here’s my current top three go-tos…

Pique Picnics
Pique have been making and delivering gorgeous, handmade luxury picnics for a while now, and their hampers are the perfect lockdown treat. If someone you know and love is celebrating a birthday, then how about Pique’s Birthday Breakfast Hamper (£40)? Filled with freshly baked mini pastries, Pique jam, filled bagels (choose from smoked salmon and cream cheese, bacon, avo and tomato chilli jam, or avo and slow roast tomato), blueberry pancakes with berries and maple syrup, Greek yoghurt with passionfruit coulis and Pique granola, iced coffee, a banana and dark chocolate loaf with birthday candles, party hats AND seasonal flowers. And if that wasn’t enough, there’s also Prosecco (75cl) and peach purée in there so the birthday girl or boy can make their very own birthday Bellini. For a cheaper treat, the Pique Me Up Hamper (£25) has a similar vibe – filled with lemon drizzle cake, double chocolate brownie bites, freshly baked sourdough, Pique spiced tomato chutney, your choice of drink and a bunch of daffodils. London delivery only – see map on website piquefood.co.uk

B is for Brownie
See ‘Sweet Treats’ below for a full description of these fabulous brownies and why am I obsessed with them, but from a gifting point of view, if you’re looking to send a small gesture of a gift, then Lou can bake and send just one single luxurious brownie for £4.50, or 3 for £11.25. Delivery is INCLUDED in that price, and as well as lovely packaging, and Lou will also handwrite your note and include it in the package. It’s the perfect (and really delicious) little gift, without having to spend loads. PLUS! Get 15% off until the end of June using the code HOME bisforbrownie.co.uk

Arthouse Unlimited
Based in Surrey, Arthouse Unlimited is a charity that presents the artistic talents of adults living with learning and physical difficulties who require varying levels of support. They sell everything from beautifully packaged chocolate bars and cool ceramics to bags, home accessories and more. Their “Packages of Love” are just what we all need right now – there are varying sizes and prices, but contents includes candles, soaps, chocolate, tea, mugs, hand written cards and more, all wrapped and packaged in gorgeous artwork. Send a handwritten card for £3.50, a card, soap and chocolate bar for a tenner or a ‘Naked Ladies’ china tankard, tea and biscuits (and a card) for £25. There’s something for all purposes / budgets, and it’s all really lovely. arthouseunlimited.org

Pasta Evangelists
Pasta is the ultimate in comfort food and Pasta Evangelists can deliver fresh, restaurant-quality pasta recipe boxes directly to you (see above) OR to a friend. Their pasta care packages include 3 delicious and nutritious recipes (choose from vegetarian only, meat only or mixed), as well as easy-to-follow instructions to prepare each dish in under 10 minutes. They’re also donating £5 per box to AgeUK. £25, free delivered. Delivered to the recipient within 7 working days of purchase pastaevangelists.com

Sweet treats

B is for Brownie (again)
I have a real-life actual problem with these brownies. I met founder Lou at a food show at Olympia many years ago and it was love at first bite. All Lou’s brownies are baked in her kitchen in the East Midlands, using single origin Madagascan and Colombian chocolate; they are dark, fudgy and seriously rich, and not for the faint hearted. As well as plain chocolate she does unbelievable flavours such as sea salted butterscotch, baked fudge, and dulce de leche. The joy is that there is no minimum order and you can buy them individually (£4.50), trio pack (£11.25) or as half (from £15) or whole slabs (from £23.50), all beautifully packaged, and delivery is free! She also sells a brilliant bake at home mix (£12, makes a half slab) which is outrageously easy and SO delicious. If you need a seriously good chocolate hit – look no further. PLUS! Get 15% off until the end of June using the code HOME bisforbrownie.co.uk

Bears Ice Cream
If you don’t live in London, look away now (sorry). Shepherds Bush ice cream parlour is one of London’s best, and they are currently delivering their terrific tubs, cones, toppings and more. I tried the brownie, honeycomb, caramel and chocolate sauce, golden syrup sponge and lemon curd, marshmallows and Biscoff crumbs . All were magnificent but the golden syrup sponge came top of the tubs for me. Next on the hit list; peanut butter, banana and chocolate shard sorbet, and milk chocolate, raspberry and hazelnut swirl. Yum. £8.50 per tub, min order of two tubs. Local deliveries are on Tuesdays and Fridays, Barnes SW13, Putney SW15, Holland Park W11 and West Ken W8 Saturdays only. Ealing W5 Wednesdays only. Want ice cream but live outside Bears’ delivery area? Register your interest here.

Paul A Young
One of London’s finest chocolatiers, Paul A Young, has just launched an online shop. Hurrah! His fresh handmade truffles are the best in town (in my opinion) – don’t miss the sea salted caramel, peanut butter and raspberry jelly, or the Marmite one (trust me). The gianduja almonds (£12.95) are also deliciously/dangerously moreish, and if like me you’ve got a thing for marzipan, Paul’s dark chocolate marzipan bar (£7.95) - made with fresh almond marzipan and no gross artificial flavourings - is a game changer. Truffle selections start at £7. P&P from £3.95 paulayoung.co.uk

Chin Chin at home kits
If you follow me on Instagram, you might know that I am mildly obsessed with desser bar Chin Chin. Their nitro ice cream sundaes are to die for – my last indulgence before lockdown was one scoop of tonka bean, one scoop of coffee and olive oil, on a bed of toasted marshmallow fluff, covered in warm chocolate fudge sauce and topped with a sprinkling of hazelnut sand. Yup. Now these dessert geniuses are delivering a range of their famous toppings (bee pollen honeycomb, caramelised pretzels, gold popping candy and more, from £2.75) tubs of handmade marshmallow fluff (from £1.95) and a griddled cookie dough starter kit (£8.95), so that you can create your very own dessert of dreams at home. P&P from £3.95 chinchinlabs.bigcartel.com

What’s cooking?

The Comfort Cookbook
This is a brand new cookbook raising funds for Hospitality Action’s Covid-19 Emergency Appeal; I originally donated because obviously it’s a vital cause, and because my wonderful, talented friend Tia Tamblyn of beautiful Botelet has also contributed a recipe, but when I received the download link I was blown away. Basically, this beautiful digital cookbook aims to ‘inspire comfort in adversity’ and features recipes and tips from top chefs, food and drink producers, and industry insiders from Devon and Cornwall. I want to cook everything in it – especially Mitch Tonks’ grilled red mullet with lemon, caper and anchovy, Fee Tuner’s smoked haddock rarebit, Nathan Outlaw’s lemon sole with green butter sauce, and Paul Ainsworth’s Thai mussels. Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall, Tom Adams (of Coombeshead Farm), Simon Stallard (of Hidden Hut), Max Wilson (of The Gurnard’s Head), Emily Scott (of St Tudy Inn), Michael Caines, Kate Atlee, Josh Eggleton and many more have all contributed really delicious (and not overly complicated) recipes. There are puddings and cocktails too, as well as cider pairing advice, foraging tips and a supplier directory. You can download / purchase the book here. Purchasers are asked to simply give what they can. The book has been created by Cornwall Content, The Maverick Guide and Ali Green Photography.

Bread Ahead online baking sessions
Brilliant bakery school Bread Ahead host FREE online baking sessions most days at 2pm on Instagram, ranging from sourdough and cinnamon buns to focaccia and family baking specials. I’ve made a mean carrot cake and the best EVER ginger cake with them over the past few weeks. They post the schedule / required ingredients on their website first, but you can now also buy a PDF of the recipes they’ve cooked / will be cooking (e-books are £5 each) breadahead.com

Ooni pizza oven
I got my Ooni pizza oven in 2016 and it’s still going strong. I love it. I love everything about it. It’s simple to use, heats up in about 15 mins, and it makes delicious pizza. It’s also so much fun to use, and I love the design of it too. The Ooni app is brilliant, as is the online community who never fail to answer cooking queries/geeky dough questions in record timing. The oven can cook other things too, but we’ve never strayed from pizza and it’s just so damn tasty. From £199, uk.ooni.com

South Devon Chilli Farm
You can make any sandwich / breakfast / lunch / dinner that bit more exciting with a splash of the South Devon Chilli Farm’s spice. I am obsessed with their chilli jam (from £3.90) and their new(ish) chilli ketchups and BBQ sauces (£3.50) lift every meal, from breakfasts to barbecues, to the next delicious level. For chillier evenings, their Aztec-style chilli hot chocolate (£5.40), made from chunky flakes of 55.5% cocoa chocolate combined with Devon chilies, is one of my favourites too. Free UK shipping for orders over £35 southdevonchillifarm.co.uk
